It is hardly surprising that the important seaside resort of Bournemouth is crammed full of spectacular landmarks and monuments. Famous throughout the world, many of these Bournemouth landmarks date back to Victorian times and earlier, and are in remarkable condition.

Bournemouth Landmarks: Bournemouth Pier - central Bournemouth, Dorset, England
The first Bournemouth pier was a simple, short wooden jetty that was constructed in 1856. Due to the popularity of Bournemouth's pier, this jetty was soon replaced by a longer wooden pier in 1861, and shortly afterwards, cast iron was used instead of the wooden piles. Soon after, part of Bournemouth's pier landing stage was swept away and the pier was closed while repairs took place, and the new and improved Bournemouth Pier reopened in 1880, at a cost of almost GBP 22,000.




Bournemouth Pier was extended further to 305 metres / 100 feet and in 1940, much of Bournemouth Pier was demolished as a precaution against German invasion during the second world war. Bournemouth Pier was soon repaired and strengthened, to allow the addition of the popular Pier Theatre, which now stands at the end of the pier. In 1979, a redevelopment programme, costing over GBP 1.7 million, reconstructed Bournemouth pier and the famous octagonal leisure complex was added.

The Bournemouth Pier remains one of Bournemouth's most important and historic landmarks and the town has grown around the pier, which remains in the heart of Bournemouth town centre. These days, attractions at Bournemouth Pier include one of the best arcades in the area, featuring many of the latest state-of-the-art video games and seaside slot-machine amusements, sheltered seating areas on the pier itself, and the Pier Theatre, which shows regular comedies and farces throughout the summer season and is also home to many other theatrical events throughout the year.
